The Costume Museum brims with a fascinating collection of clothing, accessories and textiles. Pieces from famous houses of fashion – Chanel, Schiaparelli, Paco Rabanne – are displayed, along with antiques spanning about 400 years. All together, the museum has about 35,000 items.

If you have a toddler in tow, this is the perfect place to while away a couple of hours, but it's interesting even if you're solo. Housed in a 1904 former firehouse, the museum has galleries chock-a-block with vintage firefighting equipment and pictures detailing the history of firefighting in Winnipeg. The museum also has several vehicles, including an 1882 Ronald Steamer and a 1958 Mack.

Learn all about the pioneer life-style at this museum that features guided tours by costumed interpreters. The museum boasts exhibits relating to the settlement and development of the St. James and Assiniboia area. An old municipal hall houses artifacts and photographs. The William Brown house was built in the 1850s and is a genuine pioneer dwelling.

DOWNTOWN. Located in a historic railway facility, this fun family destination is a great place to explore with a range of hands-on galleries for kids of all ages. Visit The Tree & Me gallery, designed for preschoolers with a 17 foot play Oak tree and tree slide. Broadcast the news in the television studio or ride the rails in All Aboard – featuring a vintage locomotive and passenger car.

The focus of this museum is the history of crafts in Manitoba. You'll find a wonderful collection of handcrafted items that include embroidery, beadwork, basketry, knitting, quilting, weaving, tatting, Inuit and Aboriginal stone sculpture, woodwork and pottery. There are a good number of items from other countries, collected for comparison. The library has thousands of publications, from craft technique books to tomes of history and art.

The museum is divided into four galleries: Ten Pin Bowling Hall, Manitoba Curling Hall, The Front 9 and the Honoured members gallery. The Mennonites were founded in the Netherlands in 1525 – a group came to the Steinbach area in the 1870s. Costumed guides lead you around the village and through a blacksmith shop, general store, church and replica windmill. The tour starts in the museum, where you'll learn a history of the Mennonites and their immigration to Manitoba. After your tour, enjoy a traditional meal at the Livery Barn restaurant.

The Transcona Historical Museum has as its vision to maintain and promote the history, stories and community spirit of Transcona. Exhibits explore the origins of Transcona and the accomplishments of its citizens. Visitors can learn about our railway heritage, veterans, community builders and The Greatest Transconians. There are also extensive archaeology and lepidoptera collections. Education programs for all ages can be arranged by appointment.

This fascinating center is dedicated to the study of Ukrainian history and culture. The museum houses over 8,000 artifacts representing the Ukrainian folk-art style, along with exhibits detailing the history of Ukrainian immigration to Canada. The art gallery features over 750 works by local and international artists. The library offers histories of the Ukrainian people, Ukrainian newspapers and literature, some of which has been translated into English.

Learn about Canada's aviation history. This museum is located in a hangar at Winnipeg International Airport. Several interactive exhibits recreate trips into the wild blue yonder and into outer space. Antique planes such as the Vickers Vedette, 101 Voodoo and Junkers JU52-1M are on display, and videotapes provide more information about the aircraft.
