For generations of Winnipeggers, the Bridge Drive-In is the only place in town to get ice cream. It's the perfect place to go on a balmy summer night, when you can cool off with one of 11 flavors, or try an elaborate sundae or an "upside down milkshake."

Justifiably famous desserts! From traditional layer cakes to elaborate tortes to unique cheesecakes, Dessert Sinsations has a sweet to tempt everyone. If you arrive ravenous, the café serves a full menu of sandwiches, pastas, steaks and the like. But dessert is the big draw. Be forewarned, however, that servings tend to be huge – you'll be getting a slab of cake, not a dainty little slice! Cookies, bars, tartlets and petits fours are just as good, though, and better sized for the single snacker! Cakes and desserts for diabetics and vegans are also available.

This Little Italy gelateria is usually packed – after all, gelati isn't just for summer anymore! With 42 flavors or gelati and sorbetto, you'll have a tough choice, but everything is made right on the premises, so it's truly all good! However, if the thought of eating gelati when the snow is flying leaves you cold, there's a good selection of coffee drinks as well.

Head to this cozy café in Winnipeg's French Quarter to sample desserts made with local and organic ingredients. Order a glass of milk if you plan to try the chocolate peanut butter passion cake – it's rich! For something a bit lighter, try turtle cheesecake; its filling is fluffy and light, and it's packed with nuts and caramel. The café also serves excellent sandwiches, homemade soups and light dinner entrees.

From a roster of a few hundred different flavors of gelato and sorbetto, Mercato always has 72 on hand, so this is not a place for folks who have a hard time making decisions. To make things easier, narrow your choices down, then ask for little sample tastes of each. Big, well-stuffed paninis are on offer for those with an appetite for something savory.

Gelato is big in Winnipeg, and Nucci's is usually credited with starting the trend. They offer a massive selection of gelato and sorbetto (about 65 flavors), plus robust Italian-style coffee drinks. If the weather is fine, sit out on the patio!
