Part Mexican cantina, part Irish pub, Carlos and Murphy's is reliably popular and always packed, especially on weekends. The patio was Winnipeg's first, and continues to be among its best – if the weather is nice, you'll definitely want to try for a table outside. Inside, the décor is colorful but a bit rustic, comfortable and festive. The dining room is full of families in the early evening hours, but the bar stays lively well into the night as folks sip ice cold beers and frosty margaritas. The food menu runs the gamut of Tex-Mex favorites, from burritos and enchiladas to nachos and some of the absolute tastiest wings in town.

An elegant dining room decorated with chandeliers, gilt oriental vases and classical busts sets a tone of elegance for your dining experience. Soft classical music covers the background chatter and makes you feel your table is the only one in the room. The menu offers something for everyone, with choices ranging from hot sandwiches to Chateaubriand for two. Try calamari with spicy sauce or creamy Swiss onion soup as an appetizer. Prime rib is a favorite entrée for Winnipeggers who list this spot among their favorites. For dessert, the Shmoo torte is sweet but light.

Try this hip Internet café for super light breakfasts, quick and tasty lunches and delectable desserts – all can be had while you surf at the fastest connection speeds available. Some of the most popular sweets are homemade date squares and cinnamon buns, though the chocolate truffle cake and lemon-ginger torte are also contenders for Winnipeg's best dessert. Whatever you order, be sure to also try a cup of fresh, hot specialty coffee.

Tiny and busy, Tre Visi is ideal for pre-theater comfort food. Traditional Italian cooking is superb here, from antipasti straight through to dessert. Start off with either carpaccio or fried calamari – both are excellent. Follow with farfalle Tre Visi (with tomato, crumbled hot Italian sausage and sweet red peppers), or the incredible housemade gnocchi with pesto cream sauce or marinara. Try a veal dish for your main course – you won't be disappointed. Desserts vary from week to week, but are well worth the calories.

DOWNTOWN. If you're in the mood for steak, head to Hy's. Every imaginable cut is on the menu, and all are cooked to perfection. Particularly popular is the surf and turf combination of charcoal-broiled NY strip with lobster. They also offer barbecued chicken, rack of lamb and veal dishes. Plus, locals swear by the French onion soup.

Visit this Japanese steak house and sushi bar with a group of lively friends. Sit around the teppanyaki table and watch your chef dice, flip and fry your lobster, steak, shrimp and chicken. Most meals come with soup, salad and dessert. The sushi is very fresh and excellently presented.
