For one of the best views of York and the surrounding countryside, don't miss Clifford's Tower. The tower is said to be named for Roger Clifford, who was chained to the tower and left to die following a battle in 1322. The unique tower was originally made of wood and part of a castle built by William the Conqueror, but it was later rebuilt in stone.
