This 12th-century castle was once a sturdy fortress and was reinforced even further during the Elizabethan period through the addition of a double-row of earthworks. Approximately a twenty-minute drive from York, this impressive building and the medieval earthworks are popular attractions. Inside, you can learn the history of the castle via a visual display.   (© 10Best)
