This is arguably York's oldest licensed pub, and it is located on one of the city's oldest streets, which was a Roman road and then a highway for almost 2,000 years. Since the pub's founding in 1644, it has made many people comfortable with its open fireplace, Victorian decor, and cast-iron accents. Some have even continued to come back even after their death; the pub is said to be haunted. There is also an attractive glassed-in garden with a stellar view of the Minster.
