3. Cathedral of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin MaryKaptol 31, 10000 Zagreb

This, of course, is The Cathedral. It dominates most postcards and is a key orientation point when in Zagreb (yes, it is not only beautiful but also invaluable for the geographically challenged). The Kaptol diocese was founded in 1093, and in 1242 an original Romanesque construction was erected on this spot. Since then it has been through multiple fires, a major earthquake and several recontructions, including one ongoing, but it is always with awe and wonder that we look up at 105 meters of its trademark Gothic spires. These were added in 1892, designed by Herman Bolle.
