5. Mirogoj Cemetery

Mirogoj is exceptionally beautiful, especially when ivy adorning its domed arcades turns crimson in the early autumn. But not all is in the looks, for Mirogoj literally charts the history of this city and its land. All the Croatian greats are buried here; the most outstanding monuments, built by the most outstanding architects and stonemasons, complement the original structure designed by Zagreb's beloved Herman Bolle. And down the paths from the obligatory arcades, a casual stroller will come across graves marked with hammer and sickle, crescents, crosses or Jewish stars, with inscriptions in Cyrillic and Latin alphabets, for this is a truly cosmopolitan cemetery that bears witness to all.   (© 10Best)
