When the avid collector, painter and businessman Ante Topić Mimara and his wife donated their huge collection of varied artifacts and objects d'art spanning almost three millennia to his home city and the Croatian people, it was agreed that it would be housed in a designated and fittingly impressive building. Well, this neo-Renaissance former high school on Roosevelt Square is it – the home for 3750 pieces of which about 1700 are exhibited at any one time. Remnants of the old civilisations of Ancient Egypt, Japan and Persia sit here comfortably with Manet, Rembrandt, Degas and Goya. Be aware that there is little in the way of English explanation. Watch out for the skaters at the front; the perfectly smooth pavement proves irresistible on most sunny days.
