4. Mt Medvednica and Sljeme

Just north of the city, Mt Medvednica and Sljeme, its highest peak, have been a playground for many, many generations of Zagrebians. Home to 14 endemic and 93 endangered plant species, but one thing you may not come across are bears, which once were so numerous they gave the mountain its name. Walk up one of its well-marked paths or catch a 20-minute cable car ride; once there, it is a wonder of colours and views, any time of the year. Several mountain huts offer good, warm food and accommodation; Grafičar and Puntijarka are well known for their convivial atmosphere.
