More about Zagreb
Having developed from the 11th-century settlements Kaptol and Gradec, now known as the Upper Town, Zagreb offers a distinctly medieval character (cobbled streets, secretive wooden alcoves, and fairy-tale houses) that is still its most recognizable, picture-perfect feature. The tides of history brought later development that added a decidedly Central European flavour: somewhat haughty, grand buildings and landscaped gardens that sprawl through the heart of the 19th-century Lower Town.

The soul of Zagreb isn't just the aerial view of the postcard-friendly rooftop of St. Mark's church, the towering spires of its intricate Gothic cathedral, or the beauty of its fashionably-clad ladies. Rather, it's locked in its safe, pedestrian pace of life, its refusal to conform to a global thirst for big-name coffeeshops, and in the tales of its history and legends invariably told by engaging denizens, who, by the way, still refuse to drink their alfresco 'quick' espressos in less than an hour.
