This massive medieval church was built in six phases, beginning in the mid-ninth century and ending in the late 13th century. Noted for its splendid Gothic flourishes and its stained glass windows designed by Marc Chagall, it was the former house of worship for Zürich's aristocratic ladies' guild.

ZÜRICHBERG. This is the burial site of influential Irish writer James Joyce, who lived in Zürich from 1915-19, and then again in 1941, which was the year of his death. Also buried here are Johanna Spiri, author of "Heidi," and Elias Canetti, 1981's winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature. Tram: 6 to the Zoo

St. Peterskirche (St. Peter's Church)

Zurich's oldest church, St. Peterskirche is on the left bank south of Lindenhof. The church hails from the 13th century. It features the largest clock face in Europe – 9 meters (28.5 feet) in diameter. The minute hands alone are almost 4 meters (12 feet) long. The interior is marked by Romanesque and baroque trappings.

According to legend, the Wasserkirche, which originated in the late-Gothic era, was built on the execution site of Felix and Regula, Zürich's patron saints. The open cloister on the ground floor formerly served as a courtroom and covered market and today serves as an exhibition space for young artists.
