Scotts Bluff National Monument voted runner up

While the big cities of Lincoln and Omaha boast plenty of cultural appeal, Nebraska's rugged beauty also entices in places like the Missouri River Valley and the Sandhills grasslands. What's on the top of your must-see list in the Cornhusker State? That's the question we asked our readers, and for the past four weeks, they've been voting daily for their favorites.

  • Arbor Lodge State Historical Park
    Nebraska City

    The former estate of J. Sterling Morton, the founder of Arbor Day, is now the Arbor Lodge State Historical Park. Guests can tour the 52-room neoclassical mansion, see vintage cars in the Carriage House and enjoy a picnic on the scenic, flower-filled grounds.

    Omaha

  • Ashfall Fossil Beds State Historical Park
    Royal

    Nearly 12 million years ago, the Great Plains were blanketed in volcanic ash. Within this state park, the fossil remains of animals who died in the ashfall while at a watering hole are on display in an open excavation area.

  • Rowe Sanctuary
    Gibbon

    As an important stopover in the spring migration, Nebraska's Platte River Valley is the place for witnessing hundreds of thousands of sandhill cranes on their way from the southern U.S. to Canada. Blinds at the Audubon Rowe Sanctuary make ideal spots for sunrise and sunset viewings, and lucky birders might even catch a glimpse of a whooping crane.

  • Golden Spike Tower
    North Platte

    From the top of Golden Spike Tower, visitors can look out over the world's largest classification rail yard where 150 trains are processed each day.

  • Strategic Air Command & Aerospace Museum
    Ashland

    This 300,000-square-foot museum was established in 1959 to commemorate the Strategic Air Command. The collection has grown to include numerous military aircraft and artifacts.

    Grand Island

    Covering 206 acres, the Stuhr Museum of the Prairie Pioneer recounts the history of the Midwest through costumed interpreters and more than 100 structures, including a re-created railroad town.

    Continued investments have allowed Henry Doorly Zoo to continue to offer one-of-a-kind exhibits to guests, including the world’s largest indoor desert where arid plants and animals – meerkat, peccaries, quail, gila monster, death adders, rattlesnakes and inland taipan, the wodl’s most venomous snake – are visible inside a geodesic dome year round in the heart of the Midwest.
