Southern

At 10Best, we're always on the lookout for Birmingham's best restaurants, and while we appreciate places that have a broad culinary range, we can't help but adore restaurants that specialize in a given cuisine. When we're in the mood for Southern food in Birmingham, we head to Miss Myra's Pit Barbecue - a reader favorite - or we count on Highlands Bar and Grill's solid track record and consistently great dishes. You'll find these places - and any of the restaurants on our list - to be fantastic options for Southern cuisine, and if you're looking to concentrate your efforts, start with the vibrant Five Points South area.

10 Highlands Bar and Grill
It doesn't get any better than the Highlands Bar and Grill. A veritable institution in Birmingham, celebrated Chef Frank Stitt's menu combines New South cuisine with rustic French influences. The restaurant is housed in a 1920s Spanish revival building. Known for great crab cakes and creative dishes including roast pork tenderloin served with creamy grits, blackstrap molasses and mustard greens. Superior service ensures an unforgettable dining experience. Reservations are accepted up to a month in advance. (205-939-1400)

9 Hot and Hot Fish Club
Described as serving global cuisine with local ingredients, Hot and Hot is a longtime Birmingham favorite. But don't let the curious name confuse you — the owner's great-great grandfather belonged to a gentleman's club of the same name in South Carolina. Recipient of many, many food and wine awards, the restaurant boasts entrees like wood oven-roasted duck breast and crispy confit, sauteed snapper on parsnip puree, and hickory-grilled sirloin with fingerling potatoes and blue cheese butter. An extensive wine list is also available. (205-933-5474)

8 Dreamland BBQ
When the subject of Alabama legends comes up, Dreamland should no doubt be mentioned in the same breath as George Wallace, Bear Bryant, and Bo Jackson. Known far and wide for their sinfully delicious BBQ ribs, "Big Daddy" Bishop and crew took a simple concept (ribs, their signature sauce, and a few pieces of white Sunbeam bread) and, over the years, developed it into something that can only be described as down-home gourmet. Rustic decor, historic signs, and old photos decorate the walls, recreating the character of the original Jerusalem Heights location, but the food truly steals the show. As the saying goes, "Ain't nothing like' em nowhere!" (205-933-2133)

7 Niki's West Steak and Seafood Restaurant
Demetri's opens early for breakfast (hey, the folks who are up at 6am need their hotcakes, french toast, and hashbrown poatoes just like the rest of us!), but it's the lunch and dinner fare that makes this rustic road-sider really stand out. A Disbeliever? Try their BBQ pork plate, spareribs, or turkey breast with a down-home side or two, and some sweet tea (can't forget that!). You'll be a convert in no time flat! (205-252-5751)

6 Café Dupont
Chef-owner Chris Dupont opened his first restaurant in Springville back in the mid-90s, and it was so well received he opened another location in downtown Birmingham in 2003. He had the space renovated, but certain elements — the weathered brick walls, original hardwood floors and high ceilings — remained in order to preserve the building's integrity and century-old charm. As to the fare, Dupont is dedicated to using ingredients grown locally, so his featured mains may include the likes of grilled Georgia quail with andouille sausage, Painted Hills flat iron steak with Yorkshire pudding, or Duroc pork chop with sweet potato soufflé and tempura-fried apple. 5 Moe's Original BBQ
(205-822-2773)

4 Golden Rule Barbecue
This old school roadside joint always has a packed parking lot during business hours — a testament to how good it is. Indeed, Golden Rule has been serving barbeque to Birmingham for a long time (the first one opened in Irondale in 1891), so it's safe to say they know what they're doing around a pit. There are several other Golden Rule locations in the B-ham area, including one near the original Irondale store (205-956-2678) and another in Lakeview (205-327-5414). (205-823-7770)

3 Bob Sykes Barbeque
Sure, it's a ways from downtown Birmingham. And sure, you'll pass a lot of restaurants getting here. But if you can make it to Bob Sykes, you'll be rewarded with what several regional and national publications hail as THE place for bar-b-q. The tradition of the Sykes Family's signature, slow-cooked pork and beef dates back more than 50 years, and regulars claim it's nothing short of perfection. After the long drive, treat yourself to a Big Bob Special — a large helping of Q with a drink and two sides. A word to the wise: their onion rings are homemade! (205-426-1400, 866-447-9537)

2 Demetri's Bar-B-Q
Demetri's opens early for breakfast (hey, the folks who are up at 6am need their hotcakes, french toast, and hashbrown poatoes just like the rest of us!), but it's the lunch and dinner fare that makes this rustic road-sider really stand out. A Disbeliever? Try their BBQ pork plate, spareribs, or turkey breast with a down-home side or two, and some sweet tea (can't forget that!). You'll be a convert in no time flat! (205-871-1581)

1 Costa's Famous Bar-B-Que
One of B-Ham's favorite feed spots, Costa's takes two things that make the South great (food and hospitality), and delivers them with hearty sides of fried okra, mac-n-cheese, and homemade potato salad. And just in case you were wondering, yes, their slab, chicken, and pork platters are THAT good, especially with their famous sauce. There are two other locations in Birmingham, one at Trussville Crossings (205-655-0020) and drive-thru-only store at Wildwood (205-263-0145). (205-853-9933)
