Scottsdale has no shortage of hip restaurants, and now there's one more to add to the list. The second location of Hula's Modern Tiki, the island-themed central Phoenix restaurant specializing in seafood and modern American fare, is now open in Old Town Scottsdale.
Hula's Modern Tiki delivers a menu full of island-fusion eats. For starters, try the crispy coconut shrimp rolls, which come with a pineapple-horseradish dipping sauce. During those warm summer months, the Hawaiian Ceviche offers a nice cool-down. It's a hearty serving of fresh white fish 'cooked' in citrus juice, coconut milk, chili, cilantro and garlic and garnished with crispy wonton chips.

House specials include savory dishes like Duke's Pork Luau Plate, which features slow-roasted pulled pork with a tangy soy glaze, pineapple, rice and slaw. Other popular entrees include the Island Style Poke, Jamaican Jerk Chicken Plat and the Hula Burger, a ground beef patty topped with grilled maui onions and cheese and smothered in the house hula sauce.
The restaurant is known for its selection of fresh fish, which the kitchen will prepare any way you like. You can order it encrusted in lemongrass, coconut or macadamia nut. And you can have it served pan-fried or Jamaican jerk-style.
Even though island fare is certainly the star here, Hula's has also earned raves for its top-notch, street-style tacos. Try the Habanero Lime Chicken tacos, which are stuffed with spicy marinated chicken and topped with taco slaw, black beans, rice and a creamy avocado aioli.
Vegetarians will want to try the spicy tofu tacos, which feature seasoned tofu, taco slaw, sun-dried tomato pesto aioli, black beans and rice. Hula's also has a menu of great sides, including Hawaiian macaroni salad, fried sweet plantains, Jamaican johnny cakes and wasabi mashed potatoes.
One of the most popular attractions at Hula's is happy hour, which happens Monday through Friday from 3:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. It features $5 appetizers, $3.50 draft beers and $2 Bud Light bottles.
Most Hula's fans, however, come for the signature tropical cocktails. Try Hula's Mai Tai, which is not your run-of-the-mill fruity mai tai. This one is strong and tangy, made with Appleton's gold rum, orange curacao, orgeat, pineapple and lime juice and dark rum.
If you have a sweet tooth, you'll definitely want to check out Hula's homemade desserts. The fruity Key lime pie is a favorite, and you can't go wrong with the warm brownie with macadamia nut ice cream.
