Commoner & Co. occupies the space formerly occupied by the Abbey Food + Drink on Sunrise Drive. The dining room has been freshened up with bright colors, reclaimed wood on the walls, raised plush seating and high-top tables. There's also a swanky marble-topped bar and an outdoor patio with views of the Santa Catalina Mountains.
And the menu? It features upscale New American fare that offers the familiarity of good comfort food, with a twist of creative flair.

The appetizer menu, for example, features a shrimp cocktail with a few unexpected touches. The plump shrimp are poached in vodka and then served swimming in a house Bloody Mary salsa with a side of homemade saltines and Key limes.
Another popular starter is the cheeseboard, a nicely arranged selection of artisanal meats, cheeses and olives, plus a local honeycomb for a touch of sweetness.
Main entrees include the house C&C Burger, which comes with cured pork belly cooked in brown sugar and pepper, served with horse radish pickles and house dijon on a house-made Texas toast bun.
There are also some unique dishes, including a chicken fried duck plate that includes a crispy leg and breast served on blueberry waffles with a side of bourbon maple syrup.
If you're craving a good steak, Commoner & Co. offers a seared ribeye with a balsamic-raisin steak sauce on a roasted beet and Parmesan gratin. A bright pickled horseradish salad, green beans, celery and bleu cheese add a nice zing of flavors on the side.
Like its sister restaurant Prep & Pastry, Commoner & Co. is becoming a popular weekend brunch spot.
Brunch happens every Saturday and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. The brunch menu runs the gamut from standard offerings (the Commoner breakfast, which comes with two eggs, a side of house hash and toast with house-made jam) to unique dishes like the breakfast bruschetta, a grilled hunk of ciabatta loaded with goat cheese, oven-roasted tomatoes, grilled steak and spicy arugula.
The restaurant also has a bar serving specialty cocktails and locally made beer.
During happy hour (which happens 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday and also 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. on the weekends), you can sip on a Rose Gin Fizz (gin, sloe gin, rose and lemon cordial) or a tart Commoner "Dirty" Martini that features house pickle juice, vodka and a bleu cheese olive garnish.
If wine is your drink of choice, Commoner & Co. also has a seasonally updated list with varieties from around the globe.
