In recent decades, Copacabana nightlife has long been famous for many things, but sophistication has not been one of them. Notorious for its red light activity and numerous gentleman´s clubs, Copacabana has long lost out to neighboring Ipanema in the chic stakes.
However, the 2012 opening of Bar do Copa, at the enduring glamorous Copacabana Palace hotel, raised the area's game in terms of chic nightlife options. Located right by the pool at this most celebrated of Rio de Janeiro locations, Bar do Copa almost literally dazzles those who enter, with its thousands of shimmering micro-lights, its gold-hued decor and its equally radiant clientele.
A range of indulgent cocktails are served at the bar, suitably light nibbles are on the menu and live DJs spin tunes after 10 pm. Despite an entrance fee of up to R$100 and similarly steep prices inside, you'll need to reserve well in advance if you want to step through the doors. And dress to seriously impress if you don't want the doormen to stop you in your tracks.
Those lucky enough to have a room at the Copacabana Hotel are offered free entry on Thursday night, and it's certainly worth altering your dates accordingly in order to sneak a peek at Rio's high society.
