French: With trendy "pop-ups" popping up all over town, almost too quick to even judge whether the food is good or not, it's a blessing to have a tried and true institution like Le Colonial. This Romantic French-Vietnamese restaurant in Nob Hill has been a mainstay in San francisco for years, but the recent hire of French star chef Laurent Manrique as chef consultant was meant, as they say in the pop show biz of restaurants, to take it up a notch. Be sure to try the Pho Ga, a classic Vietnamese chicken soup with rice noodles, chicken, cilantro, scallion, bean sprouts, basil, chili and lime.
Romantic Dining: If you believe the steamy, mysterious atmosphere 1920s French Vietnam is romantic, then Le Colonial is the place for you. Patchwork tile floors, shuttered windows, antique lamps and rattan furniture set among palm fronds and lazily swirling ceiling fans all work in harmony to create an elegant, sultry mood where romance can bloom. Only the freshest ecologically farmed meat, game and poultry found at farms throughout the Bay area make up the Vietnamese-style menu at Le Colonial. Some of the favorites include Goi Xa Lach Ca Chua (Heirloom tomato salad with watercress, cherry tomatoes and red onions served with basil dressing and crispy pork belly) and Goi Ca Thu (Seared Ahi tuna salad with cucumber, avocado and red onion, served with an herb-lime emulsion and chili aioli).
Local Expert Tom Molanphy Says:
French: "Good spot for swing dancing."
Romantic Dining: "Great spot for swing dancing."
Best for French Because: Le Colonial is a great choice for those who want their French food with an exotic Vietnamese twist.
Best for Romantic Dining Because: In ten short years, Le Colonial has established itself as one of the most romantic spots in all of San Francisco.
