9 Orlo's
Orlo's is located in the former dining room of the elegant Hayes-Chynoweth Mansion, now called the Dolce Hayes Mansion. 8 Picasso's
Picasso's, which is decorated with several reproductions of work from you-know-who, is a Spanish restaurant located in downtown San Jose. Tapas are the specialty here, and the restaurant is very popular with the "in" crowd. Among the most popular items are grilled mussels, stuffed Spanish peppers and spareribs. 7 Emile's
This Second Street restaurant sets a very high bar for excellence in San Jose. When you sit at one of Swiss chef Emile Mooser's tables, expect to be swept away by a truly unique contemporary European dining experience. The menu includes such dishes as peppered salmon, crusted scallops, and their famous house-cured gravlax. For dessert, try Emile's fabulous "Grand Marnier Soufflé," a delight you will never forget. 6 71 Saint Peter Mediterranean Grill
Owner/chef Mark Tabak prides himself on creating innovative Mediterranean dishes at this European-style bistro. The atmosphere is warm and inviting with superb service, cozy décor, a glass-front kitchen, and a patio dining area. Entrées include a popular roasted duck, mahi mahi, and various seafood pasta dishes. 71 Saint Peter is a lunch destination popular with the business crowd. (408-971-8523)

5 La Maison du Café
This Los Gatos bistro serves traditional French cuisine in a dining area that is reminiscent of a French country home with its latticed walls, Impressionist artwork, candles and several plants. Owner/chef Noe Valdez offers truly sublime fish and seafood entrées, and his fillet of lamb covered with a Portobello sauce offers a nice alternative. For dessert, save a little room for their excellent Grand Marnier soufflé. (408-378-2233)

4 La Forêt
Located about 15 miles southwest of downtown in the New Almaden area, La Forêt is the recipient of a fair amount of national attention. The restaurant is housed in a beautiful building that dates from the mid-19th century and mixes refinement (tuxedoed waiters) with charm (cushioned chairs and white tablecloths). Chef Davoudi's specials include innovative game dishes like ostrich or wild boar. La Forêt also offers such gourmet staples as cold-water lobster or rack of lamb. (408-997-3458)

3 Le Papillon
For more than 20 years, Le Papillon has provided the San Jose area with superb Nouveau French cuisine. This elegant restaurant is only a few minutes drive from downtown and provides a welcome respite from the bustle of the city. Appetizers include foie gras and Oestra Caviar; steamed salmon served with citrus and Open Ravioli of Wild Mushroom are among their tasty entrées. Le Papillon also offers a superb lobster menu. 2 Café Primo
Located in San Jose's Minnesota suburb, Café Primo's atmosphere is refreshing and homey. Their menu is a nice mix of California and Mediterranean cuisine, including hearty breakfasts and lunch time fare such as panini and salads. Try to save room for one of their pastries for dessert or a cup of espresso. (408-795-1200)

1 Left Bank
Unpretentious atmosphere, deliciously simple food, and reasonable prices charm locals into keeping this place consistently full. With a real feel for its Parisian origins, the brasserie makes the most of local produce and encourages patrons to enjoy a glass of wine and a plateau de fruits de mer. Other menu delights include a leek and onion tart with applewood smoked bacon, braised lamb with garlic mashed potatoes, and steamed Prince Edward mussels. (408-984-3500)
