Welcome to the Funk Zone, Santa Barbara's growing arts community that's also home to the Urban Wine Trail, small retailers and surfers. Bordered by State St., Stearns Wharf and East Beach, the Funk Zone comprises about ten very walkable blocks adjacent to the train station, ocean and downtown Santa Barbara.
See & Do
Curious about Santa Barbara County wines? Head to the Funk Zone to travel the Santa Barbara Urban Wine Trail, a walkable assortment of some of the area's best tasting rooms. From smooth Chardonnays to finicky Pinot Noirs to robust blends, you're sure to fall in love with a bottle or two. Voila, instant souvenirs!
Dining options in the Funk Zone are in a state of flux - with more and more restaurants cropping up - but one established favorite is Metropulos Fine Foods. Serving up amazing lunch fare, Metropulos also has a pantry area allowing patrons to take home specialty ingredients. Another fun option is to grab a meal from one of the gourmet food trucks known to frequent the area, particularly on weekends.
Keep an eye out for gallery openings, studio tours and winemaker dinners, the Funk Zone is home to some of the most creative (and friendliest) nightlife in Santa Barbara. Even if you haven't heard of anything special happening, a stroll through the neighborhood is bound to turn up something. Municipal Winemakers also hosts weekly movie nights, weather permitting.
Because the Funk Zone is sandwiched between the Pacific Ocean and downtown Santa Barbara, your hotel options are many and varied. Hotel Indigo Santa Barbara is located in the Funk Zone proper, directly across the street from multiple popular wineries and only a few blocks from the beach. The modern decor and satellite arts gallery makes this a good choice for stylish travelers.
A visit to the Funk Zone is sure to turn up any number of local treasures. Be it a bottle of wine from one of the tasting rooms, a thrifted treasure from The Mermaid's Chest or a hand knit sweater from Kakoon, you'll find a unique Santa Barbara souvenir in this area.
