Two of Santa Barbara's most enduring Christmas traditions take place at the historic El Presidio every December: Una Noche de Las Posadas and La Pastorela. Una Noche de Las Posadas commemorates Mary and Joseph's journey from Nazareth to Bethlehem. There are songs, refreshments and activities for the kids. La Pastorela is the tale of the (shepherds) journey to Bethlehem to witness the birth of Christ. The performance is conducted entirely in Spanish and incorporates Early California song and dance. Both events celebrate local heritage in a traditional setting where many of Santa Barbara's earliest buildings have been restored or rebuilt on original foundations. The beautifully painted chapel is especially impressive, be sure not to miss it. Lots of other great sights, shops and restaurants are nearby.
