The Flea Market Puerto Viejo may not sound like a noteworthy stop on a tourist trip of the town of Puerto Viejo, but more often than not, it's just the place to find that certain something you forgot at home, pick up a pre-owned umbrella for those rainy days or, most recently, stumble upon that perfect beach read that eluded you at the airport.

There against the wall, amidst the racks of colorful clothing that will surely help you stand out as an individual rather than a typical tourist, there is now the area's largest selection of used books, in both English and Spanish.
Since Echo Books closed down a couple of years ago, there has been a serious shortage of books in Puerto Viejo, but thanks to Maru at the Flea Market, they're back. She collects and consigns books from locals and tourists passing through, offers them at reasonable prices and will take them back on consignment once you're finished.
A recent browse of the shelves turned up vintage paperback books by Margaret Drabble, T.C. Boyle and Hemmingway, all for about five dollars each. What better way to while away some vacation time than under a coconut tree with a good book in hand?
