While it’s The Public House Irish Pub's large selection of Costa Rican craft beers that has the attention of brew aficionados, it’s also cocktails like the bright orange chiliguaro de maracuyá – a shotmade with Cacique, Costa Rica's own special brand of fire-water – that's giving some folks good reason to pay this place a visit.
Recently, bottles of Lost Coast Brewery of Costa Rica, via California, were among the new arrivals, perfect for pairing with a platter of fish and chips, one of the Public House Irish Pub’s specialties.

As soon as it opened to the public a few months ago, The Public House Irish Pub in San José, Costa Rica, started gaining a local following for its ever-evolving collection of craft beers. What's more, its creative cocktail menu complements the kitchen’s offerings, which go beyond shepherd’s pie and fish and chips, with specials such as Bavarian sausages served with sweet mustard.
Tucked down a side street of Paseo Colón – a quieter, cooler neighborhood of San José – The Public House Irish Pub is easy to find if you’re looking for it, and easy to miss if you’re not.
Like many of the capital city’s homes and establishments, a modest awning sign and nondescript exterior belies a unique space, furnished with an aesthetic that a writer for the Tico Times describes as "hipster-steampunk mashup," including a collection of vintage telephones that make up a wall display.
The Public House Irish Pub recently debuted several special new beers, including Ambar and Domingo 7 from FIFCO, the producers of the national beer Imperial. One can also sip on a Bucanero or Palma Cristal beer for less than $4 per bottle, and there's always a two-for-one special going on.
On the food menu, friends and couples can share and nosh on appetizing tapas, classic Irish platters or shepherd’s pie or bite into a German Bockwurst or Bavarian Weisswurst sausage dipped in sweet Weisswurstsenf mustard.
Now, with a recent announcement of expanded hours, The Public House Irish Pub offers all the more time to settle in for drinks, dinner and an inviting place to rub shoulders with fellow travelers and Costa Ricans, who are Public House Irish Pub’s main clientele.
