Each year, when stone crab season opens in Florida (October through May), seafood restaurants and markets proudly announce it to the public. Finding a restaurant that serves stone crab year-round while maintaining the quality is a daunting task, but The Stoned Crab in Key West has risen to the occasion. The new venture opened in 2012 at the Ibis Bay Beach Resort. The Stoned Crab Restaurant — Photo courtesy of Ibis Bay Resort
Dine on the waterfront, open-air patio situated on the perimeter of the hustle-and-bustle of Key West’s tourist area. Start things off with mango ceviche, or chilled Florida Panhandle oysters, before moving on to the mains: lobster and crab mac and cheese, yellowtail snapper, Key West bouillabaisse and chilled stone crabs. The majority of the local fish is caught by the staff of the family-run resort and served within a day of catching it (when in season), or the restaurant will cook your own fresh catch of the day. They even offer deep water catches that are difficult to come by, like snowy grouper and tile fish (poor man’s lobster).
The four-star restaurant also serves breakfast daily with items like vanilla french toast and egg quesadillas. Guests of the resort receive a 10 percent discount, and those dining at the restaurant on Wednesday evenings can take in the “dive-in” movie at the adjacent pool area (after enjoying a delicious meal).
