Restaurants with Healthy Menus: There aren't many restaurants anywhere that can claim a 100 percent vegan menu, let alone in Orlando, but Ethos has been carrying the plant-based diet torch here in town since 2007. After several years building a devoted following, Ethos moved to an expansive, modern space in Winter Park and hasn't looked back. Stop in for lunch, dinner or their popular brunch and poll those waiting (there's often a wait on Sunday mornings...!) and you'll find more than a few regulars, though health-conscious, aren't even vegans. That speaks to something, of course. Most obviously the fact that tasty food – yes, even at brunch – need not be fraught with bacon.
Brunch: Think brunch is pointless without eggs, bacon, sausage and all things buttery? Think again. Ethos Vegan Kitchen packs them in for brunch – on Saturdays AND Sundays – from 9 am to 3 pm. Their breakfast burrito in particular – smothered in creamy "sausage" gravy – is a killer in the best way possible: satisfying, laden with cruelty-free protein and served with home fries. Decadent pancakes, biscuits and Canadian "bacon," and of course more expected items like fruit, oatmeal and yogurt round out a menu capped by a weekend-only special of discounted mimosas. Don't be surprised if there's a wait. Ethos' brunch is plenty popular with non-vegans, as well.
Vegetarian: Soups, sandwiches, salads, pastas, pizzas – you name it and they can do it: 100 percent vegan. Ethos appeared on Orlando's dining scene in 2007, building a loyal following that has only grown with the increasing popularity of the plant-based diet. Here, you'll find healthier (but no less gooey) versions of mac n' cheese, sausage gravy, even a Philly "cheesesteak." Weekend brunches are popular, but an airy waiting area with comfortable seats (grab a mimosa why don't you?) makes for a painless experience.
Local Expert A.D. Thompson Says:
Restaurants with Healthy Menus: "Pumpkin seed pesto penne pasta: say it 10 times fast. Then try it."
Brunch: "Not in the mood for breakfast? Ethos' regular menu is available after noon on weekends."
Best for Restaurants with Healthy Menus Because: Light bites at vegan venues aren't surprising, but Ethos serves up rich, home-style dishes as well. Yes, Virginia. You can have gravy.
Best for Brunch Because: For a twice-weekly brunch offering comfort food for veg-heads (and a testing ground for those wondering whether they can go vegan), Ethos gets the nod.
