Religious Sites

Visiting religious sites can be an excellent way to get a feel for the culture in an unfamiliar city. Additionally, many sites are very historical and archeologically significant. 6 Notre Dame de Bon Voyage
This is the largest and most noteworthy church in Cannes, and though its exterior appears medieval, it was built in 1879 in a faux gothic style. A focal point is the portal near the front entrance, which is designed by artist Roger Capron and is to be complete in 2001. (4-97-06-44-90)

5 Notre Dame de Vie
Located in the rolling countryside on the outer reaches of Cannes, this simple chapel offers great views of the Bay of Cannes. Originally built in the 12th century, the church is near the home where Picasso spent the last years of his life. Surrounded by the foliage of cypress and olive trees, the gilded wooden altarpiece and the views make this chapel worth a visit. (4-93-45-13-87)

4 Notre Dame de Bon Port
The name of this church translates to "Our Lady of Safe Harbor," which is an apt name for this church where sailors often prayed for a safe return from a journey out to sea. The coastal location offers amazing views, though the 16th century architecture is stunning in its own right. (4-93-67-36-01)

3 Abbaye Notre Dame de Lerins
One of the biggest draws on the Île Saint-Honorat, this abbey is one of the oldest Christian monasteries in existence. Founded in the third century AD by Saint Honorat, an order of Cistercian monks still lives there today. In the gorgeous, waterside setting of this peaceful island, the monastery imparts a feeling of serenity for all that visit. Don't miss the gift shop, where you can buy items made by the resident monks. (4-92-99-54-00)

2 Eglise Orthodoxe Russe Saint-Michel Archangel
This unusual church is unmistakably distinctive, thanks to the cerulean blue onion-shaped dome that sits atop it. Three golden crosses also decorate the top of this Russian Orthodox church, which is one of several sites that show how the Russian aristocracy influenced the city of Cannes in the 1800's. 1 Notre Dame d'Esperance
Built between 1521 and 1627, this is the oldest church in Cannes. The architecture shows the influence of gothic and Renaissance designs. Dramatically located along the Old Port of Cannes, the church has breathtaking views as well as elaborate painting, statuary, and carving inside. (4-93-99-55-07)
