Bella’s Italian Café has been a staple in Midtown Savannah for more than two decades. For several years, owners Joyce and Jim Shanks had their eyes on Sandfly, a burgeoning area near Isle of Hope. Here they hoped to open a location for a second restaurant, this one a trattoria-style eatery with a neighborhood feel and reasonable prices. Their vision was realized in 2013 with the opening of Fiore Italian Bar and Grill.
Located in Sandfly’s recently renovated Norwood Plaza, Fiore is a modern space elegant enough for a date night but equally appropriate for a family meal. The attentive waitstaff works diligently to ensure that diners have a pleasant experience. They go out of their way to explain the menu, which features an array of traditional Italian dishes.
Fiore’s all-day menu has a nice selection of appetizers, including calamari hushpuppies with Sicilian dipping sauce and pesto aioli and fried ravioli pomodoro. Salads range from traditional Italian favorites such as an antipasto salad with Genoa salami, mortadella, prosciutto, capicola, ricotta salata, romaine and artichokes to indulgent options like the fra diavola salad with shrimp and the grilled tri-tip sirloin steak salad.
The all-day menu also includes several hoagies and burgers, paninis that can be ordered by the wedge and a create-your-own pasta option in which diners can choose their type of pasta, sauce and toppings.
Fiore’s dinner menu, which is available after 5 p.m., kicks it up a notch, featuring fancier fare such as cedar planked wild salmon with a balsamic honey glaze and a Tuscan chicken breast stuffed with prosciutto and mozzarella. All entrees are served with Fiore’s signature breadsticks (a favorite at sister restaurant Bella’s) and a side salad, along with a grilled seasonal vegetable skewer and your choice of seasoned fries, parmesan polenta or penne pomodoro.
Fiore’s menu is rounded out by a terrific selection of desserts, with favorites like tiramisu and ricotta cheese cannoli. The restaurant also offers a kids' menu that may be the best deal in town and a bar food menu with tasty small bites.
