After all, if you're going to eat, you may as well do it right and take advantage of Savannah's best.

Set in a historic building that boasts exposed brick walls, arched windows, and vintage photographs, Belford's is a local mainstay. And while it offers terrific steaks, it also makes a brisk business of serving incredible seafood dishes. Start with a hefty crab cake enlivened with spiced tomato jam and lemon aioli before moving to Cajun lobster ravioli, grilled mahi mahi, blackened salmon with crawfish béarnaise sauce, or shrimp, greens, and grits, a Low Country favorite that goes upscale with Chardonnay butter sauce. If you're in the mood for red meat, premium steaks come with your choice of sauce, green vegetable, and the house's buttermilk garlic mashed potatoes. Sunday brunch includes great choices including a blue crab frittata, eggs Benedict, omelets, and salads. (912-233-2626)

17 Hundred 90 Inn and Restaurant
A historic mansion dating from 1790, this property was restored and opened as an inn in 1976. Its restaurant recalls a brick-and-beams tavern, and its excellent American Continental menu features dishes like pecan-crusted grouper, coq au vin, and crab-stuffed shrimp. You'll also find a half-roasted duckling, veal medallions, and a NY strip with sun-dried tomato butter. Happy hour specials attract crowds to the inn's lounge, which (like the property itself) is apparently haunted by the ghost of a lovesick young woman. (912-236-7122, 800-487-1790)

Chart House
This reputable restaurant, which has several locations across the U.S., occupies a historic 18th-century stone warehouse and offers a beautiful view of the Savannah River. It does offer exemplary steaks, including a succulent prime rib, but the Chart House specializes in seafood. Among its popular options are macadamia-crusted shrimp, tilapia topped with crabmeat and pan-seared sea scallops. Crab legs and lobster tail are also constant hits. For dessert, the hot chocolate lava cake made with Godiva liqueur and served with Heath bar crunch and vanilla ice cream is a must, and an ample selection of wines and whiskey adds to the appeal. Olde Pink House
Legend has it that several ghosts haunt the 18th-century Georgian mansion that is home to the Olde Pink House. While it may be tempting to be on the lookout for those rumored spirits, diners will undoubtedly be distracted by the excellent food and cozy ambience that have made this one of the city's most popular restaurants. The Southern-influenced cuisine is always flavorful and features a large selection of fish, beef, pork and chicken dishes. Among the standout seafood entrees is the crispy scored flounder with apricot shallot sauce, which has been a mainstay on the menu for years. The "BLT" salad, a twist on the traditional BLT sandwich that incorporates fried green tomatoes, crispy bacon and black pepper thyme buttermilk dressing, was featured on the Food Network Show "The Best Thing I Ever Ate." The restaurant's signature praline basket filled with vanilla ice cream and topped with berries is the perfect way to end the meal. (912-232-4286)

The Sapphire Grill
One of Savannah's best fine dining restaurants, Sapphire Grill features superb cuisine enlivened with local ingredients, not to mention an extensive wine list. Located in a venerable building with an exterior of Savannah grey brick and an interior of stainless steel and glass, it's a city mainstay. Enjoy a glass of wine at the bar, or have an intimate dinner upstairs, enjoying a veal strip loin, rack of lamb, seared tuna mignon, or Niman Ranch pork osso bucco. The restaurant has received numerous awards, including recognition from DiRoNa, and has garnered praise in countless magazines and television shows. (912-443-9962)

Aqua Star
Located in the exclusive Westin resort, this dining room offers a beautiful view of the city. The kitchen specializes in premium seafood and steak dishes. Start off with she crab soup, and then dig into the signature filet, wrapped in applewood bacon. If you're still hungry, the dessert menu boasts an exquisite crème brûlée. Sunday brunch is also popular. (912-201-2000, 912-201-2085)
