For centuries, Hannover has stood at the forefront of German government and politics, going so far as to rule the United Kingdom from Germany in parts of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Much of the historic city center has been re-built many times due to war damage, most recently during World War II. Still, the city has long stood as a gem in the North, and was chosen as the site of Expo 2000. The event drew millions to the city to tour international pavilions and share ways to improve the world into the twenty-first century. First-time visitors should tour the New Rathaus, the Market church and the natural Tiergarten, in the heart of the city. Other interesting features of Hannover include the Aegidienkirche Memorial, honoring war dead, and the entertaining and educational history museum. The city's bustling night clubs and restaurants are further evidence of a boundless beauty and appeal.
