The National Museum of Contemporary Art is the only state museum in Athens with Greek and international Contemporary as its main subject and was inaugurated in 2000. The permanent collections cover the fields of painting, installations, photography, video, new media, architecture and the periodical exhibitions are presented on issues, investigations and quests of international contemporary art, individual works, retrospectives of artists and historical retrospectives with selections of thematic, conceptual and artistic tendencies. The collections include amongst others, works by Bill Viola, Gary Hill, Mona Hatoum, Nikos Kessanlis and Vlasis Kaniaris. Educational programs are often held for school groups and families, and also seminars and tours for adults, aiming at bringing the public of all ages closer to contemporary art. At present the Museum is temporarily housed at the Athens Conservatory until the completion of its own premises in the historical Fix building. At the museum shop visitors can obtain catalogues of the exhibitions, specialist art magazines, jewelry and objects inspired by art.
