Located in the heart of Kailua Kona in the King Kamehameha Mall, Big Daddy's Pupus & Beers is the type of place that's been meant to draw in locals and visitors alike. It's a new place on the nightlife scene that offers beer, a full bar and live entertainment.
This place offers locals all the little things that make them feel like they're at home, and it's those same traits that offer visitors a local experience.
Rather than standard tables to sit at, picnic tables and other tables are made from wooden electric wire spools from Hawaii Electric Light Co. The outdoor entertainment area is covered by a gray tent, the same kind locals use at backyard parties. And the bar snack? Well, it's boiled peanuts, a local snack favorite.

The owners, who are from the Big Island, made a point to make the atmosphere similar to that of a Big Island lu'au (traditional Hawaiian party) or graduation party. The intention is for people to have a relaxed, casual and fun place to eat, drink, relax, watch sports and party.
Although the place serves breakfast, lunch and dinner – where they welcome families – it's at evening and after dark when Big Daddy's serves up a fun dose of nightlife.
The appetizer menu includes local snacks such as smoked meat and onions, edamame (soy beans), kalua pork and onions and guava glazed chicken wings. Sesame shoyu poke, spicy tuna poke and spicy tsunami poke offer unique takes on the local favorite made of raw fish and spices.
The food is local and Hawaiian through and through.

The restaurant offers a quite ample happy hour, lasting from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. daily. Pupus, which is Hawaiian for "appetizers," cost $6, and domestic beers are served in an 18-ounce schooner for $4 or $3 during happy hour. Imported beers are $5 or $4 at happy hour, and well drinks are $3.
After-dark entertainment varies and ranges from live bands to DJs to free karaoke. After-dark entertainment happens all month long, and the place is a great environment for kicking back and absorbing local nightlife and lifestyle.
During football season, games are played on large flat-screen TVs.
Big Daddy's is a fun place to end the day after exploring the best of what the west side has to offer. Kick back with a cold one after a day spent at nearby Hapuna Beach Park or 69 Beach. For those who'd like a different meal before drinks and music, dine out at the Kona Brewing Co. or Huggo's.
