Bears' Coffee has been around for a long, long time – since 1988, to be exact. It's the type of place where patrons come in and chat with the very friendly owner who can recognize many who come in, and who happily jokes around with guests. This coffee shop's located in downtown Hilo, and serves as a gathering place for those who want to hang out, sip on coffee and talk for a while.
The small restaurant is simple in decor and style. Coffee cups are simple and white, and a limited amount of local art adorns the walls. The menu offers standard – yet delicious – coffee shop fare covering breakfast and lunch. Perfectly made lattes, mochas, cappuccinos and coffees are available.

For breakfast, hungry diners can choose from waffles and pancakes with whipped cream and fruit, which is a real treat for children. Bagels available are peanut butter and jelly, cream cheese and lox, with cream cheese, onion, lemon and tomato.
A wide array of freshly made scones, croissants and other baked goods can be ordered. And various egg dishes with different meats can be found, too, along with granola and fruit.
For lunch, the menu offers garden, Greek and tuna salads. For a sandwich to grab on the go or enjoy on site, choose from pastrami, turkey, ham, egg salad and chicken fillet. Super cheesy melts and a vegetarian option with marinated cucumbers and cream cheese are also available. Burritos, focaccia and a soup of the day wrap up the menu.
Bears' isn't anything fancy, but it's tasty and homey. The restaurant is one street up from Hilo Bay and the area called Bayfront. Bayfront is a hip part of Hilo that's adorned with a number of boutiques, galleries restaurants and clothing stores.
You can sit indoors at Bears' Coffee or out front to people watch.
Bears' is a wonderful place to grab breakfast before beginning a day exploring the things to see and do around Hilo. After breakfast, head over to Rainbow Falls to take in the view and sounds of a cascading waterfall into a huge pool.
Liliuokalani Park & Gardens just down the street is a lovely place to hang out and take a to-go meal. Fish in the ponds or just relax in the shade.
For a swim or a surf or to watch locals carve up the waves, Honoli'i Beach Park just outside of Hilo is where the locals go. Make it a day at the beach, or stop for a quick swim.
