Let's be frank. There may be more luxurious and modern hotels along the beach in Waikiki, but the Queen Kapiolani in Honolulu is quite affordable, especially considering the central location and sought-after amenities like an awesome pool. With 312 rooms, the hotel is a moderately-sized resort for Waikiki, where some hotels have around 600 rooms. So while it's much larger than a boutique hotel, it's not as busy and crowded as its neighbors.

Because the building was constructed in 1969, the hotel is a bit dated, even though it's been completely renovated and includes modern island-style decor. The large pool boasts an expansive vista from famous Diamond Head Crater along the beach and through the city.

The Queen Kapiolani Hotel is right across the street from Waikiki Beach, where there's plenty of space for sunning and sand play, surf lessons and people watching. The Honolulu Zoo, which has recently been revamped, is also across the street heading south. A huge array of shops, restaurants and sights are all within walking distance from the hotel, and it's also in a convenient location to catch a taxi or bus to anywhere you don't feel like walking to.
Although room rates officially start at close to $200, it's common for guests to get rates as low as $80 or so, if you book in advance and online.
