8-piece Honey Butter Fried Chicken — Photo courtesy of Honey Butter Fried ChickenHoney Butter Fried Chicken is Chicago’s newest restaurant featuring, as its namesake suggests, fried chicken served with honey butter. The ambiance is friendly and inviting once you make it past the doors. The decor is urban without being industrial, vintage without being antique and the feel of the fried chicken restaurant space has a nod to its roots without being southern or country.
Honey Butter Fried Chicken — Photo courtesy of Honey Butter Fried ChickenChefs Christine Cikowski and Josh Kulp admit that a lot of love goes into preparing and serving their fried chicken. They start with fresh, hormone- and antibiotic-free, locally sourced Amish chicken and brine it in a mixture of salt, sugar, spices and citrus as part of the prep.
Then the chicken is double-battered in buttermilk and seasoned flour, expertly fried and sprinkled with smoked paprika salt for a final kick of flavor. The fried chicken is then dipped in salty, sweet honey butter for the ultimate full flavored fried chicken experience.
Sides at Honey Butter Fried Chicken — Photo courtesy of Honey Butter Fried ChickenCikowski and Kulp describe their cuisine as familiar comfort food enhanced with thoughtful, chefly touches. Their chicken, sides, desserts and cocktails are made from responsibly grown and raised ingredients and are seasonally driven by what is available at local farmers markets. Current sides include pimento mac ‘n cheese with garlicky bread crumbs and kale and cabbage slaw with dried pomegranate and yogurt cumin dressing but will change as the seasons change.
Fans of the chicken love the fact that it’s crispy on the outside with a smoky flavor and then tender on the inside. Most don’t mind the wait but once diners get past the front doors, they are able to order a drink at the bar and wait in line with a beer in hand.
Once an order is placed, diners can sit at one of the 50 or so seats inside (there is an outdoor patio with tables, weather permitting) and food is brought out to the tables.
Chicken Wings at Honey Butter Fried Chicken — Photo courtesy of Honey Butter Fried ChickenIn addition to the honey butter fried chicken, the restaurant serves chicken wings and chicken nacho specials. The wings are roasted, tossed in a honey butter chile glaze and served with a green goddess dressing. The nachos feature chicken confit, cheddar cheese sauce, fresh salsas and house-made tortilla chips. Both are entirely different preparations from their signature fried chicken, so it gives their customers alternative, supplemental and delicious options for chicken menu items.
Adult beverages including beer, wine (by the glass and bottle) and cocktails are available.
Honey Butter Fried Chicken is comfortable, enjoyable, delicious and worth the wait.
