Chef Mirko Di Mattia hails from the Roman countryside, well known for its hearty pork products, but somehow found his calling and passion for seafood. Located in Rome's southern district of EUR, Ristorante Livello 1 is a favorite with the locals, both workers and residents. It's a bright and airy contemporary dining space and attached next door is its own 'pescheria' (fish monger / market). Here you can buy fresh fish which arrives daily from the Lazio coast including Anzio, Formia and Ponza or order a fresh fish lunch-to-go (raw or cooked from tartare to fried instalments). As you might have gathered, the restaurant menu is all seafood and despite many creative touches, the dishes stay true to the produce and are not too overdone. For entree try the panko-crumbed scallop served on a bed of cabbage with a delicately smoked mayonnaise and truffle or the tuna tataki with basil pesto, ponzo sauce and almond paste. First courses included pasta dishes like 'cazzarielli' a gnocchi-like pasta (they are made without potato) served with horseradish sauce and tuna tartare or their signature 'carbonara dei ricc(h)i' a creamy version of the Roman staple made with sea urchins. For main course take your pick from marinated amberjack with herbed potato puree, rasberries and hazelnut cream to the everchanging catch of the day. Dessert is another feast for the eyes and palate. Not only are they works of art to look at (think meringue mushroom creations inspired by Alice in Wonderland or a recreation of the chef's grandma, 'Argentina' - complete with sweet flour, rolling pin and wooden spoon) but they are delicious too and the perfect way to end a seafood feast. Add to this, an extensive wine list, cocktails at the bar, attentive and friendly service and the experience at Livello 1 is complete. Open for lunch Tuesday to Sunday and dinner Tuesday to Saturday. METRO: Laurentina.
