8 Jonathan at Gratz Park
Named for chef Jonathan Lundy, this charming restaurant has a refined, Old World feel, thanks to its presence in the Gratz Park Inn. Deep, ochre-toned walls and polished woodwork surround diners, who delight in the kitchen's "redefined regional cuisine." The hip, upscale menu includes Southern eggs benedict with fried green tomatoes, rock salt roast chicken, seasonal vegetables with potato-parmesan dumplings, and French toast with andouille sausage. A wonderful weekend respite and a favorite of the professional crowd. (859-252-4949)

7 Holly Hill Inn Restaurant
Originally a self-sufficient farm house and country home, this estimable restaurant is one of the top regional spots for superb cuisine using fresh, local ingredients. A husband-and-wife team, both Culinary Institute of America alums, heads the restaurant and creates imaginative themed meals. Three-course brunch menus include eggs benedict (several varieties), omelets, pan-fried trout meuniere, and even frog's legs. Cocktails are also available. A fifteen-minute drive from Lexington. 6 Magee's Bakery
This neighborhood establishment pulls in a loyal cast of regulars, who come to meet up with friends and chat about what's new in Lexington and in their own lives. They're joined by folks who simply crave some of the area's most applauded coffee as well as the homemade baked goods Magee's is known for. 5 Ramsey's Diner
Although Ramsey's has several locations in town, this one — set in a big, white house — is the original. Everything's casual, nothing matches, and folks love it that way. People come from all over to indulge in big portions of incredible, home-cooked food, and the much-loved signature dish is the hot brown: toast, turkey, bacon, tomato, and cream sauce, broiled to perfection. Old-school fare like chicken and dumplings, pot roast, and plenty of good vegetables are standard, and brunch is a weekend tradition in the area. It's available all day long and features simple dishes like bacon, eggs, sausage, and hashbrowns. (859-259-2708)

4 Coffee Times Coffee House
Hip and funky, this coffee house is one of Lexington's most established and is a terrific place to savor a cup of joe. Coffees are fresh-roasted in-house, and the aromas that greet patrons provide a not-so-subtle hint of the good things to come. A variety of gourmet coffee and tea drinks satisfies eager visitors, who also partake of Italian sodas and hot chocolates. Along with the tasty, requisite desserts and pastries, light fare such as soups, quiches, and deli sandwiches can help ward off hunger pangs. (859-277-9140, 877-673-0577)

3 Keeneland Track Kitchen
To immerse yourself in the excitement and busy-ness of Keeneland and Lexington's horse industry, make it a point to visit the Track Kitchen. This onsite restaurant caters to folks affiliated with equine pursuits, so you're likely to dine in the midst of jockeys, groomers, owners, and the like. Breakfast is a cafeteria-style excursion into country goodness and includes home fries, bacon and eggs, creamy grits, waffles, biscuits and gravy, and a variety of lighter options. Affordable prices are as good as the food. (859-253-0541)

2 Rossi's
Elegant, well-prepared food distinguishes Rossi's, a terrific restaurant that also benefits from a lovely dining room and attentive service. While folks relish dinner's roasted duck, coconut-crusted tuna, and char-grilled pork tenderloin, they also flock to Sunday brunch, a buffet affair that features made-to-order omelets, customized Belgian waffles, and a carving station with scrumptious roasted meats. Juices and soft drinks are included in the buffet price; alcoholic drinks are additional. (859-335-8788)

1 Stella's Kentucky Deli
While lots of high-end restaurants are promoting locally sourced foods, more casual eateries often find it difficult to compete. Not so Stella's. The easygoing place proves that premium foods don't have to come at premium prices. Fresh produce, baked-nearby breads, and local beef, lamb, and cheese figure into the menu, as seen in the classic hot brown sandwich and the seasonal fried green tomato BLT. Fair trade organic coffees and local ginger ale can also be had. Saturday's brunch buffet is help-yourself and includes great things like egg casseroles, sausage gravy, cheese grits, fruit salad, French toast, and baked goods. (859-255-3354)
