Dessert: Bananas Foster is a must eat dessert and the best place to get it is where it was first flamed, the redone Brennan's. A theatrical presentation of caramelized banana fragrant with cinnamon and plenty of rum, it's a treat that never goes out of style. Like Brennan's itself, a gorgeously redone grande dame on Royal with a lovely courtyard garden,a lovely place to sip a glass of bubbly or a craft libation. Chef Slade Rushing has kept many of the Brennan's classics along with a strong showing of modern Creole and even globally flavored dishes. Nothing cheap about this place, and the dress code is business not casual, but it's all part of the experience.
Breakfast: To say the reopening of Brennan's Restaurant on Royal Street caused a stir is like saying New Orleanians want the Saints to win the Super Bowl. Probably one of the most anticipated openings in a while, the $20 million redo of the storied restaurant is nothing short of stunning. Still pink - although more peachy than flamingo, the restaurant's classic bones have been enhanced with a gorgeously appointed new bar, a new kitchen with a portal on the street for a peek at the action and upstairs private dining rooms to fit any occasion. The courtyard seats 60 in a garden setting, soon to be sporting a fountain. There's an excellent wine and champagne list as well as specialty cocktails created by bar chef Lu Brow. Chef Slade Rushing has kept many of the Brennan's classics (turtle soup, eggs sardou, praline bread pudding) along with a strong showing of modern Creole and even globally flavored dishes, like a Two Run Farms lamb burger with Spanish blue cheese, pompano a la plancha and fried Mississippi rabbit with creamed collards and eggs over easy. A three course breakfast and lunch is available, along with bar snacks in the $13-$20 range. Nothing cheap about this place, and the dress code is all business, nothing casual, but it's all part of the experience. And yes, you can still get bananas foster tableside for dessert.
