Other Recommended Restaurants: New Orleans is a great food city, but not for Chinese food. That is changing, thanks in part to chef Doug Crowell's commitment to real deal Chinese street food. A veteran of the Herbsaint kitchen, Crowell is married to a Chinese-American, whose father is a NY chef. When he'd visit his in-laws, there was always plenty of homemade Chinese food, and Crowell paid attention. Prices are reasonable at this BYO, whether you're sharing a steamed whole local fish stuffed with lemon grass or a plate of zippy dandan noodles. The ma po tofu isn't spicy enough for true Sichuan lovers and the menu could use more vegetarian options, but one bite of Crowell's divine fried and steamed bao stuffed with soy flavored garlicky roast pork and all is forgiven.
