You may not realize it, but Baltimore has some formidable holiday traditions. There’s the Miracle on 34th Street in Hampden, lighting of the Washington Monument, Night of 100 ELVISes, A John Waters Chrsitmas and many others. I’d put money on any of those going toe-to-toe against Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree any of the twelve days of Christmas, including an up-and-coming contender, It’s A Waterfront Life.
The three year-old event, a collection of holiday events you’ll find along Baltimore’s waterfront through November and December, has become more fierce this year with the addition of the Christmas Village.
Located in West Shore Park, the German-style Christmas market will run from Thanksgiving through Christmas Eve, with more than 40 vendors offering international holiday gifts, ornaments, jewelry and arts and crafts.
This is an opportunity to find that gift that’s going to stand out and get the “ooo” and “ahh” you want from the recipient. Plus, it presents the opportunity for more lively and pleasurable shopping. I need not illustrate the alternative any more than saying, “the mall.”
In addition to the shopping and the food and sweets that will be available, they also offer drink. With such a festive atmosphere, there is sure to be warm ciders and hot chocolate–and that’s wonderful. Scanning the list of vendors, you might zero in on “Bavarian Beergraden” and gluhwein, which our research shows is warm red wine with spices. No additional research was needed for the beergarden!
Beer, warm wine, holiday shopping, bratwursts, strudel. . .now we’re in “fun for the whole family” territory. Take away the heartache, anxiety and gladiatorial combat skills required to negotiate "the mall" and you have the makings of a pleasant, enjoyable and memorable holiday shopping experience.
West Shore Park is located between the Maryland Science Center and the Baltimore Visitor Center in the Inner Harbor. There are a number of garage options and parking discounts available through ParkingPanda.com.
