Downtown Boston is the heart of the city. But finding where it starts and ends can be tough. It is closely surrounded by Beacon Hill, Back Bay, and the Theater District. This central location, surrounded by other great neighborhoods allows Downtown to flourish day and night. Some of the best hotels are in the Downtown neighborhood, and more often than not these hotels are home to bars and restaurants that should not be overlooked, it is also a great place for a good meal as restaurants range from upscale eateries to excellent and inexpensive places to stop and not to be overlooked are the collection of great take out spots; great to gather items for a picnic in one of the parks. Nightlife should not be overlooked, as bars and clubs are all within a short walk.
See & Do
The Boston Common and Public Garden sit in Boston's downtown area, on the edge of Beacon Hill and the Theater District right in the heart of the city. Beautiful year round, locals argue over which season is best in these parks. The changing face of the Common's Frog Pond entices visitors to skate in the winter and swim in the summer. While the playground is accessible almost year round. And free performances of Shakespeare are on the Common throughout summer. The Boston Public Garden is home to the Swan Boats, great for a quick ride around the lagoon, and the footbridge shows off the gorgeous plantings that surround the park that change throughout the seasons. The Garden is an ideal location for a picnic, especially when seeking a little romance.
Flanked by swank hotels, it comes as no surprise that the the Downtown area is home to expensive eateries. The surprise however lies in the affordable haunts that are almost hidden along the side streets. Silvertone has been pleasing guests for quite some time and tucked in the basement of a Bromfield Street building, it is not exactly easy to find. Serving upscale comfort food at low prices has been Silvertone's thing since before it was trendy, as has the retro vibe that makes this place uber chic. Their Buffalo wings are great for sharing and could be a meal, served with blue cheese chunks and more meat than most, don't be surprised to find yourself full before dinner. While a healthy serving their baked mac n' cheese is so simply prepared it is absolutely perfect, and almost impossible not to order at a mere $9. For many, the expertly crafted cocktails are the lure of this hidden gem.
There are plenty of places to get your groove on in the Downtown area, but one place that let's you do more than just dance is Felt. In Downtown Crossing, Felt (named for its collection of pool tables) pumps the music when the sun goes down and allows for a little lounging or a good game of billiards. Making this a place that can please you and your friends. This hot spot can see lines that keep you waiting longer than you'll be inside but that does not stop regulars from making their way to this cool place. And if you happen to get hungry, Felt is even a full service restaurant.
Downtown is on Boston neighborhood where all the hotels seem to be upscale. The Common and Public Garden are surrounded by some of the best: The Ritz, Four Seasons and the Taj to name a few. All top dollar spots, but the Four Seasons combines amazing views, and top notch amenities with great dining, afternoon tea and fantastic family programs. A stay at the Four Seasons is not complete without a meal at the Bristol Lounge, a favorite of Bostonians, they have a burger that wins rave reviews and is often paired with wine. Dubbed Burgers and Burgundy it is a popular selection from the Bristol Lounge menu.
Downtown Crossing is home to many chain stores, and one way to take advantage of the lack of sales tax on clothes in Massachusetts. Home to a Macy's, H&M, and Bath and Body works you can pick up all of your essentials in this one area. But the real draw here is the Jeweler's Exchange Building. Built in 1922, this art deco spot is the place to shop for the gems you desire. 125 jewelers are housed within, many expert craftsman who can make your jewelry dreams a reality.
