Some of the most beautiful parts of Baja California Sur are found outside of Los Cabos, from the beautiful Pacific side beaches found north of Cabo San Lucas to East Cape treasures like Cabo Pulmo and Los Barriles. Visitors to the interior, meanwhile, will want to visit the mountain potters of La Candelaria, and seek out the natural hot springs near Miraflores.
See & Do
Whether its surfing at Los Cerritos, or kayaking off the coast of La Paz, the coastal areas of Baja Sur are paradise for water enthusiasts. Cabo Pulmo boasts the oldest and largest living coral reef in the Western Hemisphere, and is a big draw for visiting divers. Further up the East Cape at Los Barriles, wind and kitesurfers gather for the Lord of the Wind competition held every January.
There are two great restaurants in Los Barriles: Road Runner Cafe and El Viejo. Road Runner specializes in diner style favorites like burgers and milkshakes, while El Viejo is the best taqueria on the East Cape, with terrific fish tacos. After a day at the hot springs near Miraflores, stop for a late lunch at the Hotel Palomar in Santiago.
There are several great beachfront bars and roadside cantinas outside of Los Cabos. The Cerritos Beach Club and Surf features a spectacular setting, fresh local seafood, surfboard rentals, and a very underrated house tequila. It's particularly popular on Sunday afternoons, with live jazz from Daline Jones and Diego Ramirez. On the way back, stop at Art and Beer near Pescadero for chocolate clams and blueberry margaritas.
The Hotel California in Todos Santos is the most notable lodging outside of Los Cabos, but there are plenty of good options, including the Hotel Palomar in Santiago, and the Cabo Pulmo Beach Resort. Palmas de Cortez is the premier resort in Los Barriles, although budget conscious travelers may prefer Martin Verdugo's Beach Resort.
To outfit yourself for the active lifestyle outside Los Cabos, stop at the Cabo Surf Shop for board shorts and surf boards. In Los Barriles, pick up apparel, kiteboarding equipment, sunglasses, and souvenirs at Exotikite. If fatigue sets in, try one of their espressos. For sundries, walk down to the general store at Tio Pablo's.
