Best Value

Trying to pin down words like frugal, value, and deal can be exasperating because different people have different ideas of cost savings. For 10Best, the range is broad - we include impossibly cheap eateries with amazing menus, and we share really nice restaurants that have perks like an impressive wine list with no corkage fee or a terrifically affordable prix fixe menu. If you're looking for Best Value restaurants in Detroit, let us introduce you to a few of our favorites, starting with Slows Bar-B-Q and Lafayette — Coney Island. They're low in expenditures and high in appeal.

10 Blue Nile
Dine utensil-free in this appealing Ethiopian restaurant, whose interior is punctuated with cultural artifacts, including bright, suspended parasols and fanciful furnishings and artwork. The Ethiopian diet is historically low-fat, and meat and vegetarian dishes are scooped by hand with the aid of injera, a type of flatbread. Eating from a communal platter is highly regarded, and fragrant dishes make use of chicken, lamb, lentils, and other herbs and vegetables. All-you-care-to-eat options are a good way to go. Afterwards, enjoy a cup of Ethiopian coffee or spiced Ethiopian tea. (248-547-6699)

9 Lafayette — Coney Island
Detroit wouldn't be the same without the famous junk food from this downtown staple, where hot dogs, chili, and fries have been elevated to art forms. Stop in late at night, and you'll find Coney Island packed with everybody from city cops to All-American Joes to local celebs, all just looking for some good-n-greasy food and a lively atmosphere. Saddle up at one of the counter stools and order away — one day, your doctor'll forbid you to eat food like this! (313-964-8198)

8 Under the Eagle
A homey joint whose ambiance is all Old World, Under the Eagle serves dish after dish of traditional Polish fare for more than reasonable prices. From roast duckling to kielbasa and sauerkraut, all of your favorite Polish dishes are here. (The combination plate lets you sample lots of them in one fell swoop.) The amiable waitstaff, clad in traditional dress, treat all diners like long-lost friends, taking time to go over daily specials and offering suggestions here and there. A great place for a hearty meal. (313-875-5905)

7 Ridgewood Cafe
Serving food created by students enrolled in the community college's culinary arts program (and staffed by them), this cafe is a wonderful place to get delicious food at fantastic prices. Certainly, there will be a few glitches as a result of the learning process, but the benefits far outweigh the slight discrepancies. Patrons can expect to find hamburgers, sandwiches, and a salad bar, along with hot entrees like veal marsala, honey-fried chicken, and shrimp cake-stuffed lake trout with cheese grits. A bakery is also available, and lunch buffets are a seasonal treat, along with fine dining lunches and high teas. (248-471-7786, 248-522-3700)

6 Russell Street Deli
Get ready for the prospect of communal dining, the din of conversation, and amazing food at this casual eatery. Fresh ingredients go into each dish, and the selection of soups and omelets changes regularly as proof. Vegetables from the market show up in both, and everything is perfectly prepared and delicious. Hash browns are great, the reuben sandwich is hefty, and the potato-leek soup is rich and flavorful. While lines are often standard on Saturday, weekday lunches are also fantastic and not as wait-intensive. (313-567-2900)

5 Señor López Taqueria
Classier and more upscale than run-of-the-mill Mexican eateries, this appealing restaurant makes sure that even the details are well considered. That's true of decor as well as of cuisine, and diners certainly appreciate the attention. The salsa has a depth of flavor you don't typically get, and the guacamole is fresh and delicious. You'll also enjoy chiles rellenos, pozole, and tamales. Breakfast, served all day, is a good bet whenever you crave it. (313-551-0685)

4 Shangri-La
Comfortable booths, polished wood trim, and etched-glass partitions add a note of richness to this popular establishment. While it serves Cantonese cuisine, Shangri-La is best known for its dim sum offerings. These delicious tidbits range from curried baby squid and pan-fried dumplings to sesame balls and steamed chicken feet. Beyond dim sum, the extensive menu includes noodle and rice dishes, casseroles, and main courses based around seafood, beef, pork, poultry, and vegetables. Late-night options are an added boon. (248-626-8585)

3 Gravity Bar & Grill
A great suburban alternative, this estimable establishment gets lots of positive buzz. The well-attended place offers both a restaurant and bar, and both of them are perennially busy. The menu takes inspiration from around the world, and its beautifully presented dishes are both delicious and affordable. Among them are cumin- and ancho chili-rubbed grouper, herb-tinged Tuscan steak, pistachio-dusted scallops, and jumbo lump crab and shrimp cakes. Terrific service is a definite plus. (248-684-4223)

2 Dakota Inn Rathskeller
Family-friendly and bursting with energy, this establishment is known for beer-drinking, sing-alongs, and good times galore. The place's Bavarian architecture and its collection of steins and mounted deer heads lend notes of authenticity, and you'll find folks regularly quaffing premium brews and dancing in traditional style. In keeping with the theme, patrons don German garb and belt out familiar tunes with abandon. Naturally, you can enjoy a good bratwurst or sauerbraten when the appetite calls, along with plenty of other well-prepared standards. (313-867-9722)

1 Slows Bar-B-Q
This appealing place gives lovers of smoked meats reason to revel. It serves up the real deal in the form of succulent pork, beef, and chicken, but it shakes up the delivery with unexpected accompaniments like smoked gouda and onion marmalade. But, purists shouldn't be too quick to judge, because the results are outstanding. Try your favorite sandwich, or opt for fried catfish, a burger, or pit-smoked ham. You'll also find salads, soups, and appetizers, including a smoked fish platter and split pea-and-okra fritters. An extensive array of wines, beer, and bourbons is even more reason to show up.
