10 Brobeck's Barbeque
Brobeck's BBQ has a country feel with farm implements, beer signs, barbecue competition ribbons and some stellar local reviews on the walls. Yet their barbecue isn't like many others in Kansas City. Dry rubs and smoke create tender, flavorful meats which customers can then slather with sauce if they like. But the owners figure many people won't need sauce once they get a taste. Pork, beef and chicken sandwiches are hefty, satisfying and cheap. Brobeck's really shines with their BBQ Dinners, including a massive combo platter with ribs, sausage and one slice of meat, a juicy Polish sausage meal or signature smoked chicken salad served with lettuce cheese and tomato plus two sides. And about those sides. Creamy yet crisp coleslaw, sweet and savory cheesy corn or smoky beans in individual crocks are all you need to create a tasty and memorable barbecue meal. (913-901-9700)

9 Smokehouse Bar-B-Que
In a city where everybody and his brother purport to have the "best barbecue around," Smokehouse stands out, thanks in large part to its mouthwatering burnt end platters and its hickory-smoked beef brisket served with fries, Texas toast, and cole slaw. If you want to go another route, consider a Polish sausage platter, rib plate, hickory-smoked chicken, or Smokehouse Special barbecue sandwich. Additional locations in the area. (816-454-4500)

8 LC's Barbeque
A local fave, this BBQ pit serves tantalizing burnt ends, double stacks, homemade sausages, and unforgettable French fries to an eclectic crowd of locals and tourists. Regulars rave about the service, and it's true that the waitstaff treats everybody, even out-of-towners, like long-lost kin. Before heading out the door, be sure to purchase a bottle of their famous "authentic" hot sauce for your own barbecue recipes. (816-923-4484)

7 BB's Lawnside Barbecue
Blues, beer, and barbecue! What more could you ask for? BB's, a rather bare-bones place, was opened by blues lovers Lindsay and Jo Shannon, whose combined music collection numbers more than 5,000 blues recordings. Don't judge by appearance -- the barbecue spot is a diner's delight. Pork ribs, battered fries, baked beans, jambalaya, and crawfish touff keep regulars begging for more, more, more. Great blues music completes the atmosphere. A real Kansas City treat. (816-822-7427)

6 Danny Edwards BLVD Barbecue
This BBQ joint has a massive following. It's no secret why -- brisket sandwiches are renowned for their size and flavor, and the ribs, dry-rubbed before smoking, enjoy a strong reputation as well. Sides include heaping helpings of slaw and pasta salad -- the absence of a deep fryer (and thus onion rings and fries) doesn't seem to bother anyone. Dessert is also limited to a few delicious choices, most notably thick fudge brownies. Show up before the noontime rush if possible. (816-283-0880)

5 Woodyard Bar-B-Q
Featured on Food Network's On the Road, Woodyard Bar-B-Que began as a wood yard that has evolved into a down-home and easygoing joint. Three large smokers encased in brick operate continuously on Monday through Saturday; Sunday is for cleaning and a little rest. Ribs at this family-owned barbecue restaurant were voted Kansas City's best by local alternative weekly, The Pitch, and Food & Wine says they make some of America's best chili. This no-frills place is all about the food, from mouthwatering ribs to lip-smacking jumbo hot wings or the massive Merriam Mixer, a plate of eight meats including pulled pork, brisket, turkey, sausage, ham and burnt ends. There are a handful of specialty sandwiches on ultra-thick bread and another handful of fresh sides, from creamy and crunchy coleslaw to smoky and savory baked beans, cheesy corn, and potato salad. When smoke billows skyward, it's barbecue time. (913-362-8000)

4 Gates Bar-B-Q
Diners have wisely come to expect great sausages, ribs, and chicken at this barbecue pit paradise. The pros at Gates have been serving deliciously tangy treats since 1945 -- and they've had plenty of time to perfect their recipes and sauces. Sit down, grab a napkin, and dig in! Friendly service punctuates delectable meals, making even out-of-towners feel like regulars. Other locations are available throughout the city, including one near Arrowhead Stadium (816-353-3880). (816-483-3880)

3 Arthur Bryant's
Considered by many to be the best barbecue spot in Kansas City, this rustic joint is always hopping at lunch as CEO's and secretaries rub shoulders with cops and construction workers over deliciously tangy fare. Offerings include excellent beef brisket, BBQ ribs, and greasy fries. A perfect place to munch and people-watch. Other locations can be found around town. (816-231-1123)

2 Fiorella's Jack Stack Barbecue
This carnivore's haven is popular with folks looking for a perfect slab of succulent barbecued beef ribs. Other specialties include lamb ribs, terrific onion rings, barbecued Strawberry Hill Polish sausage, and hickory-smoked fish and seafood. Expect a wait, but know that you'll be rewarded with an excellent meal. Additional locations in Overland Park at the corner of 95th and Metcalf (913-385-7427), in downtown's Freighthouse District (814-472-7427), and at Country Club Plaza (816-531-7427). (816-942-9141)

1 Oklahoma Joe's Barbecue
During 2009 Anthony Bourdain named Oklahoma Joe's 'One of Thirteen Places to Eat Before You Die,' in Men's Health, and USA Today named their ribs the "Tastiest Ribs in America," in 2013. YELP, Zagat, the Kansas City Star, The New York Times, The Chicago Sun-Times and Tribune, The Denver Post and many others have also raved about this wildly popular joint inside an old gas station. Owners, Jeff and Joy Stehney, have won dozens of barbecue awards, from the American Royal Barbecue to the Jack Daniel's World BBQ Championship and the World Brisket Open. Their Z-Man sandwich is legendary, composed of sliced smoked brisket, smoked provolone, onion rings, and barbecue sauce served inside a Kaiser roll. Try a terrific side of smoked chicken gumbo, dirty rice or spicy slaw too, with your beef, chicken and pork dinner or sandwich. You'll be full until tomorrow. (913-722-3366)
