Drive about 90 minutes northwest of Vegas, and you'll find Ash Meadows National Wildlife Refuge. Home to colorful warm springs and the tiny pupfish, this is an oasis in a harsh desert. A spur of Death Valley National Park within the NWR is home to the Devil Hole Pupfish, an endangered species. A four-wheel drive is not necessary on the dirt roads within the NWR, but do be prepared for non-paved roads. Get a map at the visitor center to help guide you through Ash Meadows. A boardwalk near the visitor center lets offers an easy walk with benches and explanatory placards. When you stop at the springs, look for the tiny, colorful pupfish swimming the springs. These pup fish are close cousins to the Devil's Hole Pupfish.
