Zooming Over the Desert at Flightlinez in Bootleg Canyon

See the Mojave from a different perspective

June 1, 2012 // By Terrisa Meeks

In the rugged mountains outside Boulder City, Flightlinez Bootleg Canyon shows people the desert in a while new way: from a zip line. While you may find many ways to explore the desert–hiking, driving, or even flying–Flightlinez is the only place in Southern Nevada where you can zip line over the Mojave Desert.

Suspended hundreds of feet above the desert floor, riders zoom along four separate runs as they descend down the mountain. Riders are treated to panoramic views of the surrounding desert on this exhilarating and challenging ride.

Before riders are transported to the first run at the peak of Red Mountain, they're fitted with a full-backed harness and helmet and given basic instructions on how to sit, apply brakes, and land on the platforms located between each section of zip line. A team of guides coaches riders through every phase of the experience, making riders feel at ease about hanging from a wire hundreds of feet in the air and zooming along at speeds up to 60 m.p.h..Landing Platform at Flightlinez Bootleg Canyon — Photo courtesy of Terrisa Meeks

A shuttle takes riders to a drop-off point not far from the first run, but you'll still have a short hike to reach the first zip line. You'll see the Las Vegas Strip in the distance as you hike. The vistas at every point of the experience are amazing. Riders will find more time to take in the views on the short hikes and after they've made their runs and landed. While you're zipping down the line and watching for the guides' signals on when to brake, you may not have much chance to look around.
