Constantly busy, this well-loved trattoria gives folks a double whammy with fantastic food and affordable prices. Fresh, well-prepared Italian fare is the name of the game, complete with pastas, brick oven-baked pizzas, calzones, crisp salads, and antipasti. Along with dishes like lasagne or sauteed chicken with wild mushrooms, you'll also discover rosemary-marinated flank steak, pan-seared salmon, and penne with scallops, shrimp, and pecorino. 9 Witherspoon Bread Company
Specializing in artisanal breads, this inviting shop produces incredible baked goods — both sweet and savory — in old-school fashion. The quality is impeccable, and folks flock to the place for everything they can make on the premises. Items are available to go, and desserts are a particular favorite, loaded with fruit, nuts, and other tempting morsels. Lunchtime options using the wonderful bread also prove appetizing — after all, what's a sandwich without a really good foundation? It's a question you won't answer here. (609-688-0188)

8 Hoagie Haven
An institution in the eyes of Princeton University students and local high-school kids, this small sandwich shop has been serving cheap, filling food for years. That's not to say that its appeal is solely about price. Most everything served is homemade, and the hoagies are loaded with flavor and good things — just the way you order them. Folks come in throughout the day (and night) to pick up a hefty sandwich to go. Hot options include the cheese steak, veal parmigiana, and meatball and cheese; cold offerings include roast beef, tuna salad, and provolone and Genoa salami. (609-921-7723)

7 Fedora Cafe
An eclectic, whimsical interior imparts definite character to this appealing cafe, whose energy is contagious and whose creative food is always a winner. Terrific baked goods and pastries seduce folks all day long, and in the evening, dinnertime fare basks in great ingredients and intriguing flavors. At lunch, table service gives way to counter orders, and grilled panini sandwiches tempt all comers. Wraps are also favored, and both feature zesty fillings. 6 PJ's Pancake House
For decades now, this eatery has lured folks in with light, fluffy, buttermilk pancakes, and on weekend mornings, lines string out the door as patrons wait for their turn at a stack. Luckily, hot cakes are served all day long. If breakfast doesn't hold your attention come midday, consider a cold deli sandwich or hot options that range from grilled chicken to hot dogs and cheese steaks. 5 Main Street Kingston Eatery & Gourmet Bakery
Find a perfect cup of joe and a sweet treat, or perhaps one of Kingston's great lunches. Gourmet sandwiches served on fresh-made bread include white albacore tuna salad, a grilled salmon BLT, and flank steak, blue cheese, and roasted tomato on country bread. Delightful gourmet salads include a classic spinach, honey-tinged turkey Waldorf, zesty chicken feta, and a hefty chef's salad. Hot options include chili, quiche of the day, and grilled chicken. 4 Tortuga's Mexican Village
The digs are anything but sophisticated, and you'll likely have to wait for a table, but Tortuga's terrific food is absolutely worth any inconvenience. Authentic and affordable, the Mexican fare begins with zesty homemade salsa before it shifts towards carne asada, chicken with mole sauce, tamales, and chiles rellenos. You'll also find often-Americanized dishes like burritos, tacos, fajitas, and enchiladas, not to mention a few vegetarian options. Folks are permitted to bring their own alcohol. (609-924-5143)

3 Soonja's Restaurant
An unpretentious interior and a pan-Asian menu with extensive options please diners who appreciate casual dining and cuisine that's anything but. Japanese fare is most prominent, accompanied by Thai, Korean, and Chinese dishes. Sushi is especially good, fashioned of fresh fish and a particular favorite of local college students. Other possibilities include pad Thai, chicken teriyaki, and an array of noodle dishes. Alcohol is not served, but patrons may bring their own. (609-924-9260)

2 Masala Grill
Updated Indian food, often boasting organic ingredients and California flair, finds a home at this near-campus restaurant. Earthy aromas waft through the air, a harbinger of what's to come. Rich curries are a welcome standard, and plenty of meatless dishes can be had. Tandoori dishes also find favor with diners, who appreciate lamb, chicken, seafood, and even vegan options. Great naan, fragrant samosas, and chickpea dishes further highlight the subcontinent's cuisine. 1 J.B. Winberie
This inviting, pub-like restaurant is something of a neighborhood hangout for folks wanting good American fare and a pleasant environment. Princeton's branch of the chain offers sandwiches, salads, burgers, and pastas, not to mention a well-attended Sunday brunch. Affordable prices and a fun bar ensure that plenty of students find their way here, and the rest of the community also counts Winberie's as a reliable entry in the casual dining repertoire.
