Fans don their grubbiest attire, shoot pool and down cheap drinks, from draft beer to $4 shots to $5 margaritas, at Cave's ultra-casual digs. Intriguing live bands entertain every night, and you might encounter country, bluegrass, rock, indie, funk or acoustic shows. You must be 21 to enter, with one exception: doggies of all ages are welcome. Yep, they even keep water dishes and bones handy. Membership required; $5. (919-968-9308)

7 Carolina Brewery
Patio tables and an orange awning grace the front of this brewery, housed in an attractive brick building. 4 West End Wine Bar
A wine bar, billiard hall and rooftop patio distinguish this striking space.
