When you've toured the historic buildings, visited the city museums and finished your business in town, where do you head to unwind in Philadelphia? A spectacular new offering delivers tourists, visitors and city dwellers an attractive place to eat, drink and hang out right in the heart of it all.
Independence Beer Garden threw open its doors in July 2014 - so open that they're gone! This place is open-air and resembles more of a garden than a restaurant. Here, patrons can drink (both alcohol, as the name implies, as well as fountain drinks, water and iced tea), dine, meet friends and generally escape the city, all while remaining in the midst of it.

Independence Beer Garden is the newest venture from David Fierabend of Groundswell Design Group. This group has also transformed other terrific city spaces, such as the recently opened Spruce Street Harbor Park and Waterfront Winterfest.
The group's new property at One South Independence Mall West lays out more like a garden than a restaurant and encompasses more than 20,000 square feet. Pergolas hold climbing vines and greenery, potted plants fill in the ground area and all of it helps to make the dining experience a scenic and relaxing one.
Picnic tables, custom seating and smaller table groupings make the place seem more intimate, even though it's capable of handling upwards of 300 diners. The venue also boasts a 10-foot projection TV, as well as a life-sized Jenga game, ping pong and other fun entertainment options.
Food choices at Independence Beer Garden aim to please the palate, with traditional, casual and affordable American choices such as hamburgers, french fries, salads and wings. Brews include only American offerings and feature canned, bottled, tapped and brewed options. Good luck choosing!
Between the beer and the food, the goal here is to deliver an American experience in more of a relaxed and attractive setting than the standard restaurant venue offers. Patrons can feel like they've left the city, or better yet - that they're able to relax and enjoy the best parts of the city. Dining outdoors while enjoying the view, the sounds and smells, the people, the lights and the views can cap off a busy city day with an enjoyable and magical ending.
Especially if your hotel is located nearby, Independence Beer Garden offers an opportunity to continue to experience Philadelphia while chatting with friends, visiting with family, meeting up with others or simply refreshing and refueling with a meal and a brew. What could be better than that?
