Duxton Hill has undergone such a transformation over recent times, it is barely recognizable from a couple of years ago. Gone are the run-down shophouses featuring flashing neon signs and the laughter of loose women, and in their place a selection of hip and happening bars and restaurants, bursting to the seams with Singapore’s in-crowd.

One of the latest establishments creating a buzzing atmosphere along this narrow lane is casual Mexican taqueria Lucha Loco. Specializing in gourmet Mexican street food, you won’t find any cheese-drenched burritos here, but you will find a tantalizing range of tacos, ceviches and tostados, in a menu created by Chef Jason Jones of Melbourne’s Mamasita fame, and Lucha Loco’s very own Chef Mario Malvaez of Mexico City.

Highlights include the juicy Chorizo and Braised Beef Brisket Taco, the fresh and zesty Mango and Kingfish Ceviche, and the fiery Elotes – grilled corn smothered in mayonnaise, chilli and crumbly cotija cheese. If you don’t like fire in your food, you might want to choose elsewhere to eat… or down a few more Mexican beers with your quesadillas.
Like many of its Duxton Hill neighbors, Lucha Loco does not accept reservations and seating is strictly on a walk-in basis. The good news is, they serve up a mean margarita, so you won’t mind standing at the bar for a while.
