We also point out good neighborhoods for Greek restaurants in Greenville - Haywood Road, for instance. When the craving hits, we'll make sure you get your fix!
This Greenville landmark sports an unimpressive exterior and a nondescript decor, but having breakfast at Stax's is a local tradition. The warmth of the staff, many of whom have worked there for ages, is well known, and the hearty, down-home breakfasts are highly recommended. For a true southern biscuit, light and slathered with butter, this is the place. Eggs, hotcakes, grits and all the basics are hot and satisfying, just like your mom used to make. As for later in the day, the meat and veggie selections have been keeping Greenville well-fed for years – and their roast beef and gravy has won over many a palate. (864-232-2133)
Incredibly popular for lunch, the Pita House is always crowded. Still, the service is fast and the patrons are never rude. Plus, the food is great! Garlicky hummus, fresh-baked pita bread, stuffed grape leaves, and hot falafel will appease your appetite for something unusual. When you place your order at the counter, keep an eye out for a table. Turnover is quick, but seats are at a premium. The best deals are plates, which come with a sampling of several foods. Share with some friends, and don't forget the baklava. (864-271-9895)
Two Chefs Delicatessen and Market
Bill and Judy Balsizer are the driving force and the two chefs behind this popular downtown deli, which is consistently packed with folks intent on indulging in the fresh, delicious fare. Known for gourmet sandwiches, soups, and entree salads, Two Chefs offers temptations like roast beef on a French roll, a turkey melt with cranberry chutney, grilled chicken and fresh pear salad, and Asian noodle salad. You'll also discover fantastic baked goods, meals to go, wines, and gift baskets. Sidewalk seating is ideal when the weather is nice. There's a second store, Two Chefs To Go, at 8590 Pelham Road (864-284-9970). (864-370-9336)
Olive Tree Pizza & Grill
Attended regularly by local folks, Olive Tree takes pride in its home-style Greek and Italian food. A laid-back ambience reigns, and the no-frills interior means that no one feels out of place or is uncomfortable. As a result, you'll find lots of people tucking into hearty pasta dishes, gyro platters and large, crisp salads. Portions are substantial, and even better, they're more than affordable. (864-284-9050)
